Union Preschool’s story began in 1981, when the visionary Mrs. Denise Welden opened its doors in the St James Anglican Church Hall. What started as a humble “playschool” for farm children attending on Mondays and Fridays quickly blossomed into a vibrant hub of early childhood education, as town families joined in and the community embraced the initiative. With a modest monthly fee of just R20, the foundation was laid for something truly special.

In 1982, Mrs. Jill Wilson joined the journey, and by the end of 1983, the school had outgrown its original home and moved to the Catholic Church Convent building. Leadership evolved over the years, with Mrs. Anne Beagley taking the reins in 1989, followed by Mrs. Fuchs in 1992—each bringing their own warmth and dedication to the school’s growing legacy.

A pivotal moment came in 1991 when Mrs. Sue Olivier joined the team. Her passion and leadership led her to become head teacher in 1994, guiding the school with care and commitment until the baton was passed to our current principal, Mrs. Lindsey Greeff.

A new chapter unfolded on 15 June 2017, when Mr. Derek Light, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, signed the contract with Mr. Raymond Smith of Perfecto Builders to construct a brand-new preschool facility. Designed by Mr. Bernie Weyer of Waterston Weyer Roon Architects, construction began on 3 July 2017, and by 11 December, the keys were handed over to the Governing Body. In January 2018, the new Union Preschool officially opened its doors on the corner of Park and Donkin Streets.

This modern facility boasts five spacious classrooms, state-of-the-art amenities, and a prime location opposite the High School—giving our learners access to excellent sports fields and shared resources.

Today, Union Preschool proudly educates 120 children aged 3 to 6 years, supported by a passionate team of 12 staff members. After completing their preschool journey, our learners transition seamlessly to the Preparatory School, equipped with confidence, curiosity, and a love for learning.

From its humble beginnings to its thriving present, Union Preschool continues to be a cornerstone of early childhood education in Graaff-Reinet—where every child is nurtured, every milestone celebrated, and every future bright.
